What the clutch actually does
It separates the engine from the gearbox so a gear can be selected. Down means disconnected; up means connected. It is operated with the left foot, and the left foot has no other job.
The accelerator controls how much power the engine makes. Between them they decide whether the vehicle moves smoothly or stalls, and pulling away on a level road is done in first gear.
