Overtaking is the one manoeuvre where you deliberately put your vehicle where oncoming traffic belongs. Every rule about it is really a rule about being able to see far enough to finish.
Right is the default
You pass on the right, then return to the left as soon as you can see the vehicle you passed in your mirror — far enough back that pulling in does not force them to brake.
While you are alongside, you are in the lane oncoming traffic uses. That is the whole risk, and it is why the view ahead is the deciding factor rather than the speed of the vehicle in front.
