Privacy policy

The short version: you can practise the entire test without an account and without telling us who you are. If you do sign in, we keep your answers so the app can work out what you are weak on. We do not sell anything about you to anybody.

Who is responsible

This app is operated by the owner of k53.tech, who is the responsible party for the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

For any privacy question, correction or deletion request, contact zubeid.hendricks@gmail.com.

What we collect, and why

Nothing below is collected for its own sake. If a field is here, some feature stops working without it.

Nothing at all, if you just practise

You can take mock tests, drill and browse the signs without signing in. Your wrong answers and attempt history are stored in your own browser and never leave the device.

Your email address, and your name if you give one

Only when you create an account. Handled by Clerk, our sign-in provider. It is what lets your progress follow you from a phone to a computer.

Every answer you give while signed in

Which question, what you chose, whether it was right, and how many seconds you spent on it. This is what produces your drill list, your readiness estimate and your weak-area analytics. Without it those features cannot exist.

Answers from people who are not signed in

Recorded with no identity attached — no account, no name, no device identifier — and used only to work out which questions the population as a whole finds hard. We cannot link these back to a person, including you.

Your test date and testing centre, if you enter them

Entirely optional. Used to show a countdown on your progress page. Leave them blank and nothing changes.

Payment records, if you subscribe

Payfast tells us that a payment happened, for how much, and confirms it against our reference. Their notification includes the name and email address you gave Payfast, and we store it as received so a payment can be traced if it is ever disputed. Your card number never reaches this app at all.

Standard server logs

Our host, Vercel, records request information including IP addresses, as any web server does. Used for security and to find faults.

Adverts

When adverts are enabled they are served by Google AdSense, which uses cookies and device identifiers.

We request non-personalised adverts only. A learner's licence can be applied for at 17, and at 16 for a motorcycle, so a real share of the people using this app are under 18. Rather than ask everyone their age in order to decide, we switch personalisation off for everybody. Adverts are chosen from the page you are on, not from a profile of you.

Adverts never appear during a test or a drill — only on the home page and on results screens.

These are not gated behind the question above. They are non-personalised, they are what keeps the app free to use, and we rely on legitimate interest under section 11(1)(f) of POPIA for them. The Facebook pixel is a different matter, which is why it is asked about separately.

You can review Google's own handling at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Measuring our advertising

If we advertise the app on Facebook, we would like to know which advert brought you here. That uses Meta's tracking pixel, which tells Facebook that you visited.

We ask first, and nothing is loaded unless you say yes. Decline and no request is made to Facebook at all — the script is never fetched, so your visit is never reported. Saying no changes nothing about the app: every question, mock test and drill works exactly the same.

If you accept, we record when a mock test is started and finished, along with the score, so we can tell which adverts reach people who actually practise. Your name and email address are never sent.

Changed your mind? Clearing this site's data in your browser resets the choice and you will be asked again.

If you are under 18

POPIA treats anyone under 18 as a child, and their personal information may generally only be processed with the consent of a parent or guardian.

You do not need an account to use this app. If you are under 18, practise without signing in — nothing personal is collected that way, and every question, mock test and drill still works. If you want an account, ask a parent or guardian first.

If you are a parent or guardian and would like an account removed, email us and it will be deleted, along with everything attached to it.

Who else sees it

These are operators processing information on our behalf, under their own security obligations. None of them is permitted to sell it, and we do not sell it either.

ClerkSign-in and account management. Holds your email address.
NeonThe database holding your answers and progress.
VercelHosting and server logs.
Payfast (by Network)Payment processing. They hold the card details; we never do.
Google AdSenseAdverts, when enabled. Non-personalised.
MetaAdvertising measurement — only if you agree to it.

Some of these operate servers outside South Africa, mainly in the United States and the European Union. Using them means your information is transferred across borders under the safeguards in section 72 of POPIA.

How long it is kept

Account and practice data is kept for as long as your account exists. Delete the account and it goes with it.

Payment records are kept for five years after the transaction, because tax law requires it.

The anonymous question statistics stay indefinitely, because they contain nothing that identifies anyone.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you
  • correct anything that is wrong
  • delete your account and everything attached to it
  • object to how we are using it

Email zubeid.hendricks@gmail.com and we will act on it. There is no charge and you do not have to give a reason for a deletion request.

If you are not satisfied

You may complain to the Information Regulator, who is independent of us:

If what we collect changes, this page changes at the same time. The date at the top tells you when it was last touched.
